Many aspects of the computer science field are in more trouble than we like to admit. In language understanding, computer vision, knowledge representation, formal methods, design of "intuitive" systems ... progress is MUCH slower than we once hoped. Are there deep reasons for this, buried in paradigms we inherit from the broader culture? I will argue that there are, and that we are only beginning to appreciate how much we have to change before we can make real progress. We have reached the limits of our current philosophy.
