RALI-OLST-ILFC Weekly Talks

On Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. (Montreal time), we hold a one-hour talk on a language processing or linguistics topic. It is typically offered in hybrid mode (in person/videoconference). Once a month, the talk is organized by the French research group Linguistique Informatique, Formelle et de Terrain.

EasyEnglishAnalyzer -- Ambiguity Resolution in Preparation for MT

Salle 3195, Pavillon André-Aisenstadt

Ambiguity in the source text can wreak havoc for even the best MT system today. Most MT systems process text one sentence at a time. Few, if any, are equipped to deal with sentences like "John likes accommodating people". EasyEnglishAnalyzer (EEA) is an authoring tool that points out certain types of ambiguity, and, where possible, suggests unambiguous alternatives. Using EEA for pre-editing the source text before M-translating into several languages makes sense because it reduces the need for post-editing each translation. The talk will describe how EEA fits into the worlds of Controlled Language Checkers and Grammar Checkers, and how it makes a difference for the quality of MT output. We will also describe some of the techniques used for identifying the ambiguous structures and producing the rewriting suggestions. EEA is an application of McCord's Slot Grammar parser, described in a companion talk.
