Automatic generation of weather information

Natural language generation and data-to-text technology can be used to automatically generate textual weather forecasts from numerical weather simulation data. If done well, such forecasts can be of similar quality to human-written forecasts. I will describe several forecast-generation systems we have built at Aberdeen University, for pollen forecasts, marine forecasts for offshore oil, and road icing forecasts; and also briefly describe some work being carried out at a new spinout company, Data2Text. I will also discuss some of the challenges faced by forecast generators, such as describing the motion of weather systems.
