As Far East Asia becomes a dominant region of the world economically, culturally and politically, the importance of Far Eastern languages in a global marketplace is growing rapidly. However, NLP technology for the Far Eastern languages would not meet the demands of market. That is because of a relatively wide gap between theory and research. That is, since Far Eastern languages show quite different characteristics in grammar from western languages, almost all theories and methodologies originated from western countries, mainly focusing on English, could not have been applied successfully to the Asian languages. In this talk, I will introduce some characteristics of the Far Eastern languages (Chinese, Korean and Japanese) and their related NLP issues, and then give an introduction of my research activities showing some demo systems.
