Kalaallisut legal terminology: Understanding the work of language pioneers in Greenland today

Salle C-9019, Pavillon Lionel-Groulx — En présentiel, avec diffusion simultanée sur Zoom

The official language in Greenland is Kalaallisut, but despite general decolonization efforts the legal system remains Danish. Legal translation from Danish to Kalaallisut is therefore constantly carried out within the Greenlandic parliament, government, courts, and society in general, feeding a non-stop need for Kalaallisut legal terminology management and development. This work is carried out mainly by Inuit translators and interpreters frequently tasked with transferring foreign legal concepts to Kalaallisut.

The seminar presents a current PhD project using qualitative methods and case studies to shed light on the challenges and pioneering efforts of central actors in Kalaallisut legal terminology work today. By getting to know their work processes and terminology-related ways of thinking as well as linguistic strategies applied in term creation, a better understanding of the state of the art may be reached and built upon by language specialists, lawyers and decisionmakers.

Biography — Therese is a PhD student at Ilisimatusarfik (University of Greenland) at the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies. She holds university degrees in Law as well as Linguistics combined with Greenlandic and Arctic Studies (Uni. Copenhagen and Ilisimatusarfik). Past full-time employments include a top tier Danish law firm and the Government of Greenland. Therese grew up in eastern Denmark, but in adult life Nuuk has for many years been her home.
