logo du RALI Réacc Installation within Microsoft Word

Follow these steps to install Réacc (automatic French accentuation dll) on your computer running Windows XP with Microsoft Word.

How Réacc works

By default, Réacc is inactive when you start Word. Using the Réacc menu, you can

Réacc works in two modes:

active
Typing a non-alphanumeric character triggers Réacc to restore accents in the current French sentence (as defined by Word Visual Basic). Réacc first removes all accents from a sentence before reaccentuating, this can be cumbersome in cases where a specific accent is manually put on some words. In those cases, you should deactivate Réacc.
Réacc does not restore accents more than once within a second. For example: if you type J'ai mange and  then you type very fast ca , you will only see J'ai mangé ca instead of J'ai mangé ça although it will be corrected within the next second. This implementation trick prevents Réacc from restoring accents too often within the sentence when the user holds down triggering keys and from affecting the user's typing speed.
inactive
Réacc does nothing and does not interfere with Word.

Warning

This module demonstrates the RALI's ability to integrate NLP tools within MS Word. In most case, it works smoothly with Word and does not affect your typing speed.

However in some pathological cases,  the program seems to freeze for several minutes on sentences that repeat many times a potentially accented word. For example, trying to restore accents of the following sentence freezes Word for several minutes...

J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange J'ai mange.

This behavior is still mysterious to us because the same sentence does not cause any problem when the same dll is called from an ordinary program. Les voies de Dieu (Microsoft) sont insondables...
